Flexitank vs. Drum: Choosing the Most Cost-Effective Packaging for Bulk Oil Export

October 25, 2026

You select packaging by balancing cost per tonne, handling capability at destination and risk of quality loss during transit.

Quick comparison

Factor

Flexitank (20 ft container)

Steel Drum (190–200 L)

Typical capacity

20–24 MT

190–200 kg per drum

Payload efficiency

Highest

Lower (packaging weight adds up)

Cost per tonne

Lowest for full-container loads

Higher at scale

Destination handling

Requires pump-out equipment

Forklift or manual handling

Reusability

Single-use

Often reusable

Contamination control

New food-grade liner each time

Depends on cleaning protocol

Best order size

Full-container industrial loads

Smaller or fragmented shipments

Flexitank – maximum payload, lowest cost per tonne

A single 20 ft container carries 20–24 MT of refined edible oil. This removes the weight and volume of hundreds of drums, cuts packaging cost and maximises net oil payload.

Food-grade multi-layer construction and proper container selection keep oxidation and leakage risk low when loading and securing procedures are followed.

Flexitank works best when:

  • Volume justifies a full container

  • The receiving facility can discharge by pump

  • Lowest landed cost per tonne is the priority

Steel drum – flexibility and simpler handling

Drums remain practical when:

  • Order volume is below full-container level

  • Destination has limited bulk discharge infrastructure

  • Multiple delivery points or smaller warehouse spaces are involved

  • You need to move partial lots or trial quantities

Each drum is independently sealed, stackable and widely accepted. The trade-off is higher packaging cost and more handling units per tonne.

Cost and risk factors that matter

  • Flexitank usually delivers the lowest cost per tonne once volume reaches full-container scale.

  • Drums add packaging weight and require more labour at both ends, but reduce dependence on specialised pump-out equipment.

  • Both formats can maintain oil quality when food-grade materials are used and the oil meets agreed limits (FFA ≤0.1%, peroxide value ≤1.0 meq/kg, moisture ≤0.1%).

  • Every shipment should travel with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and full export documentation.

Practical decision guide

  • Large, regular volumes + bulk receiving capability → Flexitank

  • Smaller or split shipments + standard warehouse handling → Steel drum

  • Medium volumes with forklift access → IBC 1000 L is often the middle option

You define the volume, destination constraints and cost target. We match the packaging format and keep the oil specification consistent across every shipment.
